AFHL’s Players of the Month – January 2025

The Alberta Female Hockey League is proud to announce the Players of the Month for the month of January – Avery Sam, Jaida Klimach, Ainsley Kryway and Dylan Wanvig. The league is also proud to announce this month’s recipient of the Humanitarian of the Month Award, Reece Miazga.

Humanitarian of the Month 

Reece MiazgaLloydminster Musgrave Steelers U18 AA 

The Alberta Female Hockey League Humanitarian Award recognizes players who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to their community through volunteerism, leadership, and positive contributions to the welfare of others. Reece Miazga exemplifies these qualities through her ongoing dedication to making a difference in the lives of those around her. Reece is in her third and final season playing on the U18AA Steelers team. She has been an assistant captain for the past two seasons and is a dedicated athlete and an inspiring leader and role model both on and off the ice. Reece actively volunteers with various community organizations, including the Lloydminster Interval Home and KidSport, where she helps create opportunities for children in need. 

As a “Kindness is Power” facilitator, she advocates for inclusivity, positive relationships, and the importance of empathy in everyday interactions. Her work with children with disabilities has enriched their experiences in sports and recreational activities, ensuring everyone feels valued and included. At school, Reece has been instrumental in creating new opportunities for students with disabilities to be included in various activities. She has worked closely with teachers and administrators to develop initiatives that promote accessibility and engagement for all students. She has helped foster an environment where students feel welcome and empowered to participate fully in school life. Despite balancing her rigorous hockey schedule, academic excellence, and part-time work as a private skating instructor, Reece remains committed to giving back. She embodies the spirit of community service by leading initiatives that promote kindness, inclusion, and opportunity for all. Reece looks forward to pursuing an education in Psychology and is excited about a summer student opportunity with the Bea Fisher Center. The core focus of the Bea Fisher Group of Companies is to help individuals with developmental disabilities live as independent and meaningful lives as possible. This opportunity aligns perfectly with Reece’s passion for inclusion and advocacy, allowing her to continue making a positive impact on the lives of others. Reece Miazga’s unwavering dedication to the welfare of others makes her an exceptional candidate for the AFHL Humanitarian Award. Her leadership, compassion, and commitment to creating a positive impact exemplify what it means to be a steadfast humanitarian within the AFHL community.  


Players of the Month 

U18 AAA – Avery SamCalgary Fire BlackF (5GP, 4G, 2A, 6P)

Avery has proved that her age is no barrier to success. As one of only two players born in 2010, she currently ranks as the second-leading goal scorer with 13 goals, leading all rookies in this category. During the month, she notched four goals and two assists across five games, helping her Calgary Fire Black team achieve two crucial victories over their cross-city rivals and the Lloydminster Steelers. With a strong monthly record of 3-2, Avery’s exceptional performance has not only turned heads but also underscores her role as a remarkable ambassador for the sport and the AFHL. 

U18 AA – Jaida KlimachPCFAC StormF (6GP, 3G, 6A, 9P)

Jaida’s unwavering love and passion for hockey have not only propelled her to impressive statistics, contributing to the team’s remarkable 5-1 record, but have also brought infectious joy to her teammates. Jaida’s dedication and skill on the ice embody the spirit of the game and serve as an inspiration to aspiring players everywhere. 

U15 AA – Ainsley Kryway Calgary Fire White F (9GP, 9G, 6A, 15P)

Ainsley Kryway showcased exceptional performance and leadership both on and off the ice. With an impressive 38 points in just 27 games, she currently ranks 2nd overall in league scoring, demonstrating her consistent offensive contributions. Despite her team being placed 6th in the league standings, Ainsley’s relentless work ethic shines through, particularly in critical moments. Her versatility is evident as she excels in scoring, defensive responsibilities, and special teams play. Ainsley’s inspiring leadership and positive attitude elevate her teammates’ performance, making her an invaluable asset to her squad. 

U13 AA – Dylan WanvigCalgary Fire RedD (7GP, 3G, 3A, 6P)

Dylan displayed exceptional leadership and reliability, significantly contributing to her team’s impressive unbeaten streak of 16 games in January. Going 5-0-2 for the month. With a remarkable tally of three goals and three assists in just seven games, her offensive prowess was matched only by her formidable presence on defence, where she effectively neutralized the opposing teams’ top players in the South Division. Dylan’s elite skating ability and strength make her a force to be reckoned with in one-on-one matchups. Her commitment to her team’s success and versatility on the ice make her a worthy nominee for Player of the Month.
